The TV Viewer Online Community Business Model

ourchart.jpgSo, the L Word is the latest TV show to jump on the “online community” bandwagon. A few shows have really done well with their communities, creating value outside of the context of the show itself. The Biggest Loser Club is my current favorite example of a truly integrated community that could live beyond the life of the show.

Realizing that the lesbian community really didn’t have too many well-funded and publicized online content and community applications, the L Word creators decided to launch Our Chart, based on the “hook-up” chart that found its genesis on the show.

Unlike the  chart on the show itself, the community is focused on friendships and connections, and less about hooking up. It also features some interesting original content produced specifically for the site.
