The Cashmere Mafia vs Lipstick Jungle

Come September, the airwaves will be rife with powerful estrogen as two networks launch pretty much the same show. NBC optioned and developed Candance Bushnell's Lipstick Jungle, while ABC got heavyweight screenwriter Kevin Wade (Meet Joe Black, Maid in Manhattan) to give them Cashmere Mafia. Both tell the story of a group of successful, high-powered female executives struggling with balance, life, and office politics in Manhattan.

I just finished watching both pilots, and here's my prediction: Lipstick Jungle will be cancelled within six episodes, but Cashmere Mafia's going to find a small, but growing audience. One's much more relatable to the core audience than the other, and frankly, much better written. Lipstick Jungle feels like there were a dozen writers playing around with the script, and eventually, they decided to go in all pulled directions. Perhaps this is just by comparison, but Cashmere ended up being a bit more tight, emotional, and even though it tells the story of relatively inaccessible lifestyles, the emotions and contexts are strangely universal.
